The Problem

The Sparrow project in Lawrenceville, GA required a stormwater management solution capable of meeting detention volume requirements while maintaining site usability. The design challenge required by our partners at Kimley-Horn had to accommodate two separate BMP locations with strict grading constraints and limited available footprint. The system also needed to support traffic loading conditions and integrate with site drainage infrastructure, including multiple inlet and outlet connections. Construction scheduling required coordination between design completion in September 2024 and installation completion by August 2025.

 

 

The Solution

The project utilized two underground detention systems constructed with AquaCell modular chambers. BMP 5 provided approximately 4,301 ft³ of storage, while BMP 6 provided approximately 6,672 ft³ of storage, combining for total system capacity exceeding 10,900 ft³.

 

Each system consisted of a three-layer AquaCell configuration with geotextile wrapping, stone base and cover layers, and underdrain provisions. BMP 5 measured roughly 27.56 ft by 33.46 ft, while BMP 6 measured approximately 43.31 ft by 33.46 ft. Both systems incorporated inlet and outlet pipe connections ranging from 12-inch to 18-inch diameters.

 

 

The Impact

The combined AquaCell systems met required stormwater storage criteria while enabling infiltration benefits not typically achieved with conventional detention systems. The modular design allowed flexibility in layout and accommodated site geometry constraints.

 

By utilizing underground detention, the project preserved usable surface area for site development.

 

The system design and installation all coordinated with our partner SRG Stormwater, supported efficient construction sequencing, contributing to successful project delivery within the planned timeline.
