Introducing HepVO: The Waterless P-Trap
HepvO is a unique self-sealing waste valve that prevents the escape of foul sewer air from waste discharge systems, and actively maintains the pressure equilibrium in soil and waste installations. HepvO can be used on sanitary appliances (e.g. bathroom sinks, kitchen sinks, showers), and can also be installed on condensate lines from boilers and air-conditioning units.
As a dry sealing valve, HepvO utilizes a purpose designed membrane to create an airtight seal between the living space and the drainage system. The self-sealing valve opens under the water pressure of a fixture emptying, and closes to form a tight seal after the fixture has discharged under normal atmospheric conditions.

We are Pat and Nick owners of California Tiny House located in Fresno CA. When building tiny houses the first thing you notice is you are working with very limited space. Plumbing, especially the waste, always consumes most of the under counter space you have available. Since using HepvO Waterless P-Trap not only the space required is reduced but the labor to add a P-trap and vent is eliminated.

Applications
HepVO in the Bathroom
HepvO, the sanitary waste valve can be installed in a number of bathroom applications including; Sinks, Bath Tubs, Bidets, and Showers.
As house design becomes more complex, there is greater potential for pressure fluctuations to occur in plumbing systems. This might not sound too serious at first glance; however it can lead to the standard water seal traps fitted under sinks, basins and showers to fail.
Examples of some of the design flaws in bathrooms that can lead to pressure fluctuations include the following (which might be found for example in an adjacent bathroom and ensuite):
- Excessive length of branch pipe from waste
- Combined branch pipes
- Alternative branch runs incorporating vertical drops below WC
- Vertical drops to bath waste
- Shallow seal traps
Water seal traps have been habitually installed by the industry for many years, however they are vulnerable if such pressure fluctuations occur. This will cause the tell-tale gurgling which indicates that siphonage is occurring in the system, and that the water seal has been broken, and foul air allowed in. As HepvO is waterless, it prevents foul air from entering a building when siphonage might have otherwise been a factor.
HepvO can be installed horizontally by using the 90 degree adapter, which avoids cutting the floor under baths and showers to accommodate the ‘U’ bend of a trap.

HepVO for AirBnB’s & Vacation Homes
Forget the traditional waste P-trap that dries out.Because HepvO is a waterless trap system, it is great to use in situations of infrequent use, including holiday homes, guest bathrooms and recreational vehicles (RV’s).
If the fixture is not used for an extended period, evaporation of water in the traditional P-Trap will lead to a loss of the water seal. In hot climates, with a higher risk of rapid water evaporation, this can be a particular problem, leading to odors escaping into the buildings after a relatively short period of time. Deeper P-Traps could be used, but they would require more space close to the fixture, so the HepvO sanitary waste valve with its slimline design is an ideal alternative in this situation.
In cold climates the water in a p-trap is likely to freeze, block with ice and potentially crack. The HepvO is not a water filled device, so does not suffer from these limitations. It does not require winterization by draining down or the addition of anti-freeze. It will continue to provide a barrier to sewer odor ingress, even under extreme low temperature conditions when the fixture is not being used and it will not suffer crack damage.
HepVO in RV’s, Campers, Boats & Motor Homes
The space saving solution for your waste trap, used today by most major RV manufacturers.
Because HepvO is a waterless trap system, it performs successfully in RV’s and other moving vehicles where traps can lose their seal through movement and vibration. HepvO can be used in the following RV applications:
- Sinks
- Showers
- Lavatories
The use of the HepvO waterless trap also avoids a problem of the water seal freezing, and evaporation of the water seal in warm weather or extended periods of non-use, which would lead to odors escaping the vehicle.
The HepvO is used instead of the P-Trap to protect the living space from foul odors from the grey water tank, black water tank or campground sewer system.
Installation

- HepvO can be installed vertically or horizontally, or any angle in-between. When installing horizontally a minimum allowable slope of 1/8” (3.175mm) per foot (30.48cm) must be maintained to ensure good drainage. This can be achieved by using the HepvO Angled Adapter supplied in the HepvO kit.
- When installed at any angle other than vertically, the HepvO must have ‘ribs down’ to ensure correct drainage.
- HepvO valves must be installed in the correct direction of flow which is clearly marked on the body of the product.
- HepvO must be installed either immediately at the exit of each fixture, or in-line up to a maximum distance of 6ft from the exit of the fixture. Note that when used to protect a single fixture HepvO must always be installed upstream of any tees or branch connections to other waste pipes.
- HepvO must be installed in an accessible location.
Maintenance
No routine or seasonal maintenance is required for the HepvO sanitary waste valve, however, should you blow-out your drainage lines do not exceed 80-100 psi.
- HepvO is resistant to standard caustic-based drain cleaners. It is also resistant to acid-based cleaners with concentrations up to 10%. When flushing with higher concentrations of acid based cleaner, the valve must be removed before the operation.
- If mechanical drain cleaning devices are to be used it is necessary to first remove HepvO from the waste system. This provides a useful access point for servicing downstream pipework.
- It is good practice to rinse the HepvO valve with clean water after any maintenance procedure.
