The problem
A new logistics center near Magdeburg, central Germany, faced significant challenges with rainwater management due to an overstretched sewage pipe from the 1990s. Despite occupying approximately 24 hectares, the area could only discharge a limited amount of rainwater into the sewer, requiring substantial rainwater retention systems. However, as the space was intended for logistics and parking purposes, only limited surface storage reservoirs were feasible. The original plan included 6000 m³ of underground concrete basins and 3000 m³ of corrugated steel pipe for retention, but replanning was needed to meet specific requirements.
The solution
To address the rainwater retention needs efficiently, Wavin proposed an alternative solution utilizing QBic+ storage spaces with PE coating. Three modular, flexible storage tanks were connected together to ensure proper rainwater management.
The design allowed for less than 30 days from order to delivery, making the installation process seamless and meeting the requirements for heavy truck access and easy cleanability. The system was also government-approved, guaranteeing compliance with industry standards.
The impact
Wavin's proposed solution proved highly effective in managing rainwater retention for the logistics center. All deliveries were made on time, and the installation occurred within the exact agreed-upon period. The system's space-saving design allowed for efficient utilization of the limited surface area. Additionally, the installation team operated almost autonomously, making the process smooth and efficient.
With the successful implementation of this project, further joint projects in Europe are being planned, showcasing the reliability and effectiveness of Wavin's solutions in rainwater management and retention.
